Skin cancer treatments vary depending on what type of skin cancer is diagnosed. There are three types of skin cancer. Two of them - Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Basal Cell Carcinoma, are not deadly. They do not metastasize and will not end up killing a person. Melanoma, however, can be deadly. Skin cancer treatments, in the beginning, are similar. Skin cancer treatments for all three skin cancer types will first include the removal of the affected skin. This is usually done right in the office of the dermatologist.
For Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Basal Cell Carcinoma, skin cancer treatments usually end with the removal of the affected area. For Melanoma, however, skin cancer treatments can include radiation and even chemotherapy, depending how far the cancer has spread. Skin cancer treatments for Melanoma will mirror those of other cancer. Skin Cancer treatments can include radiation and even chemotherapy, depending on the stage of the Melanoma. It is important to have any suspicious mole checked out by a dermatologist right away to get an early diagnosis to avoid additional skin cancer treatments.
Biopsies are often part of skin cancer treatments, although there is no need for follow up in most cases. In some instances, laser therapy can be included in skin cancer treatments; however it is more common for quick surgery to remove the cancer than laser therapy. Skin cancer treatments are usually done very quickly with a local anesthetic. It generally takes only a half an hour for most skin cancer treatments done in the office of the doctor. In most cases, skin cancer treatments are not painful at all and only leave a minimal scar.
If there is more than one affected area, as is the case with many Basal Cell Carcinomas, more than one may be removed to avoid several skin cancer treatments. |
