What you need to know about family and group travel insurance policies

Those of you planning a group or family holiday this year can find a variety of ways to save on your holiday costs. Not least by choosing a family travel insurance plan rather than individual travel insurance packages.

These group or family packages usually offer far cheaper insurance costs than would be incurred by insuring each member of your family separately. Just ensure that you check the details of your provider, as some will class children as being under the age of 18, while some will allow children up to the age 23. And you do not have to travel with your family every time to enjoy this type of insurance cover.

In most cases, insurers will cover anyone named in the policy, even if they are travelling to another destination separately. Further benefits include free child cover. You will find that most policy providers will offer completely free cover to children under the age of two, while others will provide free cover to all children.

Insurers are also aware that many people will not be looking to sign up two adults to their policy as parents. In fact, most insurers will provide a single parent discount so that single parent families can enjoy the same insurance deals offered by a family policy. It is worth noting that any child who wishes to travel must do so in the company of a named adult.

This is particularly pertinent for older teenagers who may wish to travel alone or with friends. Should they choose to travel alone then they will be required to purchase their own separate cover. As travellers over the age of sixty-five are considered to have a much higher medical risk than younger family members, people in this age group cannot usually obtain group or family insurance.

It is possible for someone in this age group to be named on such a policy, but you should expect to pay a much higher premium to do so. Various types of cover are available via family policies. You can choose from single trip family insurance, or annual cover, which means that the whole family is covered for an entire year no matter how many trips abroad they take.
